Are you considering weight loss surgery in Cincinnati, Dayton, or Columbus, Ohio? If so, education should be your first step in the process. As a leading bariatric surgery center in Ohio, we strive to educate our patients on all aspects of surgery. On this page, we will start by examining the broader definition of weight loss surgery.
Weight loss is defined as a decrease in body weight resulting from either diet and exercise or voluntary activities. However, extremely overweight people often have difficulty losing weight by engaging in voluntary activities or even with medically supervised diets, exercise and behavior modification programs.
In some instances, they may already have health problems as an effect of their weight problem, which are called co-morbidities. Weight loss surgery is often considered an option to help them lose weight, gain back their health, and eliminate their co-morbidities. Type II diabetes is a great example, as most of the time this disease will go into remission after surgery.
Weight loss surgery is commonly known as bariatric surgery and involves surgical procedures done on the stomach and/or intestines to help a person lose weight. This is usually considered an option for persons who have a BMI above 40. It is also an option for people with a BMI of 35 to 40 who are experiencing health problems such as Type II diabetes or heart disease. Lower-risk procedures such as gastric banding are even sometimes offered to patients with a BMI of 30-35 on a case-by-case basis.
We offer 5 procedures as we feel a comprehensive approach is in the best interest of our patients. Despite what you may read on some web sites, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to obesity!
- Lap Band
- Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
- Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
- Laproscopic Loop Duodenal Switch (SIPS Procedure)
If you feel like surgery is not for you but you still want to lose weight and improve your health, we offer the non-surgical gastric balloons, as well as comprehensive medical weight loss programs with pharmacologic support including the diet pill Adipex (phentermine).
