Contrave is a unique non-stimulant combination drug that impacts both hunger and cravings. Approved by the FDA in 2014, it is a combination of two medications that have been around for decades: bupropion and naltrexone. The combination of these two medications was shown in the FDA trial to help patients lose 5 to 9 pounds more than patients taking a placebo medication in place of Contrave. In another study, patients who took Contrave for up to a year were able to lose an average of 8% of their total body weight, or 18 lbs. Contrave is indicated in patients with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27-30 with at least one weight-related health condition.
Contrave is indicated for long-term use, meaning that if it’s working for a patient they can stay on it indefinitely, as long as they are able to achieve a 5% total body weight loss at the end of 3 months. Your team at JourneyLite will go over your goals with you at your initial consultation, as well as what to expect from the medication as far as dosing and side effects.
If you would like to get started on Contrave, or if you have questions about the medication, just fill out an appointment request and one of our Patient Service Representatives will get in touch!
