The Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication, or simply “Lap Nissen”, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves repairing a hiatal hernia, then “wrapping” the upper part of the stomach around the end of the esophagus. The creates a “valve” that will still let food go through, but prevents acid from refluxing up, which reduces heartburn symptoms.
This procedure takes about 90 minutes and can be done as an outpatient. Unlike the Stretta Procedure, a Lap Nissen may be covered by insurance. There are many long-term studies on the results of Lap Nissen showing significant reduction in GERD symptoms and need for long-term medications and major improvement in quality of life for patients who suffer from chronic GERD.
