In Ohio, Adipex or phentermine can only be used for a 3 month course of therapy, and in Kentucky 6 months. Contrave & Qsymia, however, do not have any restrictions on the duration of therapy. This is great news since obesity is a chronic disease which can require longer therapy for success.
We offer appetite suppressant programs in our Cincinnati, Columbus, Northern Kentucky and Dayton locations!
Adipex (generic: phentermine)
Adipex is a powerful appetite suppressant that can help you lose weight by decreasing cravings and hunger, while stimulating metabolism. It is probably the most commonly-prescribed weight loss medication world-wide, and is available in a generic which makes it one of the most cost-attractive options. JourneyLite Physicians has been utilizing it with great success for well over a decade, in both surgical and medical weight loss patients.
Qsymia (generic: phentermine/topiramate)
Qsymia is a combination of two older medications, phentermine and topiramate, and was approved by the FDA for use of chronic weight management in 2012. Similar to Adipex, the phentermine component of Qsymia is believed to trigger the release of norepinephrine in the brain, which increases blood concentrations of the hormone leptin, which is involved in regulating hunger. Topiramate, also known as Topamax, is an anti-seizure and anti-migraine medication that can work along with phentermine to increase a patient’s sense of fullness and make food taste less appealing.
Contrave (generic: bupriopion/naltrexone)
Contrave is a unique combination drug that impacts both hunger and cravings. Approved by the FDA in 2014, it is a combination of two medications that have been around for decades: bupropion and naltrexone. The combination of these two medications was shown in the FDA trial to help patients lose 5 to 9 pounds more than patients taking a placebo medication in place of Contrave. In another study, patients who took Contrave for up to a year were able to lose an average of 8% of their total body weight, or 18 lbs. Contrave is indicated in patients with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27-30 with at least one weight-related health condition.
In combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise, we often see a first month weight loss of 10-15 lbs. This is also a great option for Lap Band, Gastric Bypass, or Gastric Sleeve patients to augment your success after surgery.
