JourneyLite Completes Third Cohort of Allurion Gastric Balloon Patients, Including Patients Traveling from Nashville and Columbus
By Dr. Trace Curry, MD, FASMBS
Founder & Medical Director, JourneyLite Physicians and JourneyLite Surgery Center
On Thursday, June 25, 2026, the JourneyLite team completed our third cohort of Allurion Gastric Balloon placements since the device became commercially available in the United States. This was another exciting milestone for our gastric balloon program, with one patient traveling from Nashville and another from Columbus to receive the Allurion Balloon at JourneyLite.
Both cases took less than 10 minutes! For patients who have been looking for an effective, non-surgical weight loss option that does not require anesthesia, surgery, or endoscopy, the Allurion Balloon represents a major advancement.
It is also becoming an important option for patients who are looking for a GLP-1 alternative, especially those who do not want to stay on long-term medication, have had side effects from weight loss injections, are concerned about cost, or simply want another medically supervised approach.
A New Non-Surgical Option for Weight Loss
Many patients today feel stuck between two very different choices: injectable weight loss medications such as GLP-1’s on one side, and bariatric surgery on the other. At JourneyLite, we believe patients should have access to a full range of evidence-based options, including medical weight loss, gastric balloons, gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and revisional bariatric surgery when appropriate.
The Allurion Gastric Balloon helps fill an important gap. It is not surgery. It does not permanently change the stomach. It does not require an incision. It does not require general anesthesia. And unlike traditional gastric balloons, it does not require routine endoscopy for placement. Instead, the Allurion Balloon is designed to be placed during a short office visit, using X-ray guidance.
How the Allurion Balloon Is Placed
The Allurion Balloon begins as a small capsule attached to a thin catheter. During the office visit, the patient swallows the capsule with water. Once the capsule reaches the stomach, we confirm its position with an X-ray. The balloon is then filled through the catheter, and a second X-ray confirms that it is properly filled and positioned. The catheter is then removed. The entire process is typically completed in minutes.
In fact, for our most recent cohort, both placements were completed in under 10 minutes. Patients are then monitored and given detailed instructions for the first few days after placement, including hydration, nausea prevention, diet progression, and follow-up expectations. Over time, the balloon helps patients feel full sooner and work on portion control while participating in a structured weight loss program.
After approximately four to five months, the balloon is designed to empty and pass naturally through the digestive tract. Patients who want to review regulatory information can also read the FDA Premarket Approval information for the Allurion Gastric Balloon System.
Why Patients Are Considering the Allurion Balloon as a GLP-1 Alternative
GLP-1 medications have helped many patients lose weight, but they are not the right fit for everyone. Some patients experience nausea, constipation, muscle loss concerns, medication fatigue, supply problems, insurance denials, or high out-of-pocket costs. Others simply do not want an open-ended medication plan.
The Allurion Program is promoted as a no-surgery, no-endoscopy, no-anesthesia weight loss option, and at JourneyLite we evaluate each patient carefully to determine whether this type of non-surgical tool is appropriate.
The Allurion Balloon may be a good option for selected patients who want:
- A non-surgical weight loss tool
- No anesthesia
- No incision
- No routine endoscopy
- A temporary treatment
- A structured program with physician-led follow-up
- An alternative to GLP-1 injections
- A bridge between lifestyle treatment and surgery
It is important to understand that the balloon is not a magic device. Like any weight loss treatment, results depend on patient selection, nutrition, behavior change, follow-up, and long-term planning. At JourneyLite, we use the balloon as part of a comprehensive program with registered dietitian support—not as a stand-alone quick fix.
JourneyLite’s Experience With Gastric Balloons
Gastric balloons are not new to our practice. JourneyLite has been involved with balloon therapy for years, including Orbera, Spatz3, and now Allurion. JourneyLite even participated in FDA clinical trials for many of the balloons that have been released in the U.S. Our program has always focused on helping patients choose the right tool for their medical history, weight loss goals, budget, and comfort level.
Patients comparing options can review JourneyLite’s complete gastric balloon comparison page, which explains the differences between Allurion, Spatz3, and Orbera.
What makes Allurion different is the simplicity of placement. For many patients, the idea of avoiding anesthesia and endoscopy is very appealing. This is especially true for patients who may not be ready for surgery, do not meet criteria for bariatric surgery, or want a temporary non-surgical treatment before considering more intensive options.
Dr. Curry’s Role in the First U.S. Commercial Allurion Balloon Placements
I was honored to be the first physician in the United States to commercially place Allurion Gastric Balloons after FDA approval. That milestone was meaningful not only for me personally, but also for the JourneyLite team and for patients across the region who have been waiting for a less invasive gastric balloon option.
You can read more about that milestone here: Dr. Trace Curry Performs First Post-FDA Approval Allurion Balloons in the U.S.
JourneyLite has always tried to stay at the forefront of safe, innovative weight loss care. As a board-certified general surgeon and Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, I have spent more than two decades helping patients compare surgical and non-surgical options in a way that is practical, honest, and individualized. Patients can also learn more about my background, training, and experience on the About Dr. Trace Curry page.
Our goal is not to push every patient toward the same treatment. Our goal is to help each patient choose the most appropriate treatment for their situation.
Patients Are Traveling to JourneyLite for Allurion
The fact that patients are traveling from places like Nashville and Columbus for Allurion reflects the demand for experienced, physician-led non-surgical weight loss options. Many patients are doing extensive research before choosing a provider. They want to know who is placing the balloon, how much experience the team has, what follow-up is included, and what other options are available if the balloon is not the best fit.
At JourneyLite, patients have access to a broad range of weight loss services in one program, including:
- Allurion swallowable gastric balloon
- Spatz3 adjustable gastric balloon
- Orbera gastric balloon
- Medical weight loss
- GLP-1 medication programs when appropriate
- Gastric sleeve
- Gastric bypass
- SADI/SIPS
- Revisional bariatric surgery
- Long-term nutritional and behavioral support
That range of options matters because the best treatment is not the same for every patient.
Is the Allurion Balloon Right for You?
The Allurion Balloon may be appropriate for certain adults with obesity who are looking for short-term, non-surgical weight loss support and who meet clinical criteria. It is not appropriate for everyone. Patients need a medical evaluation, review of prior health history, medication history, weight loss goals, and any GI-related symptoms or conditions before deciding whether the balloon is a good option.
Patients can use JourneyLite’s BMI calculator as a starting point, but a medical consultation is required to determine candidacy.
Some patients may be better candidates for a GLP-1 medication. Others may be better served by a surgical option such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. Still others may benefit from a temporary balloon as a first step. The key is to be evaluated by an experienced weight loss team that offers multiple options and can explain the pros and cons clearly.
For additional patient education, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery patient resources and the NIDDK weight management information center provide helpful background on obesity treatment and weight management.
The Bottom Line
Our third Allurion cohort was another encouraging step forward for JourneyLite’s non-surgical weight loss program. Two patients—one from Nashville and one from Columbus—completed balloon placement in under 10 minutes each, without surgery, anesthesia, or endoscopy. We even had a patient travel from West Virginia for her Allurion placement!
For patients looking for a GLP-1 alternative or a non-surgical option that fits between medication and surgery, the Allurion Gastric Balloon may be worth considering.
At JourneyLite, we are proud to offer this new technology as part of a comprehensive, physician-led weight loss program built on experience, safety, education, and long-term support. Patients who want to compare costs can review our pricing and financing information.
