First Commercial Allurion Balloon Patients in the U.S. Are Ahead of Schedule
JourneyLite was honored to perform the first two commercial Allurion Gastric Balloon placements in the United States after FDA approval. The earliest patient results are very encouraging, with both patients already building momentum in a structured weight-loss program.
The first two patients are off to a fantastic start
These are early results, and individual outcomes vary, but both patients are progressing ahead of the pace we would typically expect this early in a balloon program. Just as important, both patients are using the Allurion Balloon the right way: as a tool within a structured plan that includes nutrition, habit change, accountability, and follow-up.
Lee Ann
Lee Ann was JourneyLite’s first commercial Allurion patient in the United States. Her early progress has been outstanding, with 18% of total body weight already lost.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth, JourneyLite’s second commercial Allurion patient, is also doing fantastic. She has already lost 6% of her total body weight and is progressing ahead of schedule.
Individual results vary. These early patient results are encouraging but are not a guarantee of future outcomes. A medical consultation is required to determine candidacy, review risks and benefits, and compare available weight-loss options.
A major milestone for incisionless weight loss
At JourneyLite, we have spent more than 20 years helping patients choose the right weight-loss tool for their body, their health history, and their goals. Some patients need bariatric surgery. Some patients do well with medical weight-loss medications. Others want a non-surgical option that does not involve a permanent change to the stomach or intestines.
That is why the arrival of the Allurion Gastric Balloon is such an exciting step forward. The Allurion Balloon is a swallowable gastric balloon designed to help patients feel full sooner, eat smaller portions, and build healthier habits during the months the balloon is in place.
Unlike traditional gastric balloons that usually require endoscopy for placement and removal, the Allurion Balloon is designed to be swallowed as a capsule, confirmed by X-ray, filled in the stomach, and later pass naturally after it deflates. For many patients, that means a non-surgical, non-endoscopic, non-anesthesia approach to short-term weight-loss support.

How the Allurion Balloon works
The Allurion Balloon is designed to make portion control easier by occupying space in the stomach. Patients often feel fuller with smaller meals, which can make it easier to reduce calorie intake and start building better long-term habits.
Swallow
The patient swallows a capsule containing the deflated balloon, attached to a thin catheter.
Confirm
An X-ray confirms that the capsule is positioned properly in the stomach.
Fill
The balloon is filled through the catheter, then checked again to confirm proper filling.
Support
The balloon works alongside nutrition guidance, habit change, tracking, and follow-up support.
Why these early results matter
Weight-loss tools are most successful when they help patients create momentum. Early progress can improve confidence, reinforce healthier choices, and help patients believe that change is possible.
Lee Ann and Elizabeth are two different patients from two different states, but they have something important in common: both are using the Allurion Balloon as a structured tool, not a magic trick. The balloon helps with fullness and portion control, but the real transformation comes from pairing that tool with better nutrition, follow-up, accountability, and consistency.
“We are thrilled with how our first two Allurion patients are doing. These early results show exactly why we were excited to bring this technology to patients in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, and beyond.”
— Dr. Trace Curry, JourneyLite Medical Director
Who may be a candidate for Allurion?
In the United States, the Allurion Gastric Balloon System is indicated to promote short-term limited weight loss in adults with obesity between ages 22 and 65 with a BMI of 30 to 40 kg/m² who have had at least one unsuccessful attempt at a weight-loss program.
A consultation is the best way to determine whether Allurion, medical weight loss, gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, SADI, or another option is the best fit. JourneyLite offers both surgical and non-surgical options, so your recommendation can be based on your goals, health history, BMI, risk factors, and preferences rather than a one-size-fits-all program.
Allurion vs. medications vs. surgery
Many patients are comparing GLP-1 medications, gastric balloons, and bariatric surgery. Each can play an important role, but they are not the same.
GLP-1 and medical weight loss
Weight-loss medications can be very helpful for the right patient, but they often require ongoing use and can become expensive over time.
- No surgery
- Can be adjusted over time
- May require chronic treatment
Allurion Gastric Balloon
Allurion fits between medication and surgery. It is temporary, non-surgical, and designed to support meaningful early weight loss without permanently changing anatomy.
- Swallowable balloon capsule
- No routine anesthesia or endoscopy
- Structured lifestyle support
Bariatric surgery
Procedures such as gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and SADI generally offer the most powerful and durable weight-loss results, but they are surgical procedures.
- More durable average weight loss
- Can improve obesity-related conditions
- Requires surgical evaluation
Frequently asked questions about Allurion at JourneyLite
Does the Allurion Balloon require surgery?
No. The Allurion Balloon is designed as a non-surgical weight-loss option. It is swallowed as a capsule, filled after X-ray confirmation, and does not require incisions.
Does Allurion require anesthesia or endoscopy?
Routine Allurion placement does not require anesthesia or endoscopy. The capsule is swallowed, position is confirmed by X-ray, and the balloon is filled through a thin catheter.
How long does the Allurion Balloon stay in place?
The balloon is temporary and is designed to deflate and pass naturally after its treatment period. Your JourneyLite team will review the expected timeline and follow-up plan during consultation.
How are JourneyLite’s first two Allurion patients doing?
Both are doing fantastic and are ahead of schedule. Elizabeth, a 64-year-old female from Kentucky, has lost 6% of her total body weight. Lee Ann, a 43-year-old female from West Virginia and JourneyLite’s first Allurion patient, has lost 18% of her excess body weight.
Is Allurion right for me?
That depends on your BMI, medical history, previous weight-loss attempts, medications, goals, and risk factors. JourneyLite offers both surgical and non-surgical weight-loss options, so we can help you compare choices and select the safest, most effective path.
Is the Allurion Balloon better than GLP-1 medications?
Not necessarily. The best option depends on the patient. Some patients do well with medication, some prefer a temporary gastric balloon, and others may benefit most from surgery. JourneyLite offers multiple options, so the consultation can focus on fit rather than forcing every patient into the same plan.
