Pain Medications

You will typically receive a prescription for a pain medication as well.  Most often the script is for either Norco or Percocet tablets.  If you have an allergy or sensitivity to either of these please let your provider know at your pre-op/consent visit.

• Norco (generic-hydrocodone/acetaminophen)
  • Norco comes in a tablet form.  Take according to the directions on the bottle.
• Percocet (generic-oxycodone/acetaminophen)
  • Percocet comes in a tablet form.  Take according to the directions on the bottle.

Additional Prescriptions for Gastric Bypass Only:

• Neurontin (generic-gabapentin)
  • Gabapentin can help with nerve pain that is caused from closing the muscle fibers with a large suture that must be dilated to get one of the staplers in..  Take according to the directions on the bottle.
• Flexeril (generic-cyclobenzaprine)
  • Cyclobenzaprine can help with muscle spasms also caused by this suture.  Take according to the directions on the bottle.

• Colace (generic-docusate sodium)
  • Bypass patients can be prone to constipation, Colace can help with this.  Take according to the directions on the bottle.

Important:

• As soon as your pain begins to lessen, you should transition to Extra-Strength Tylenol.
  • Both of the Percocet and Norco have Tylenol as a component, so do not use the two medications together!
