Immunosuppressants

prednisone

Lastly, immunosuppressants such as prednisone and Humira must be stopped prior to surgery.

They also will need to be held for a period of time afterwards, as they can greatly increase the risk of staple line leaks.

If you take an immunosuppressant, be sure to notify your provider at your pre-op/consent visit.  Failure to properly manage these medications prior to surgery could result in your procedure being canceled!

Common immunosuppressants:

  • Prednisone
  • Methylprednisolone
  • Medrol dose pack
  • Methotrexate
  • Plaquenil (generic: hydroxychlorquine)
  • Remicade (generic: infliximab)
  • Humira (generic: adalimumab)
  • Enbrel

Important!

Sometimes patients come down with an upper respiratory infection after their pre-op consent visit and their PCP will prescribe some steroids. If this happens, please contact us before taking anything!
