Birth Control and ED Medications

For women:
Birth control pills and vaginal rings must be discontinued 4 weeks prior to surgery and not resumed until 4 weeks after surgery in order to decrease the risk of blood clots.
IUD’s, Depot Provera, and implantable birth control (such as Norplant) do not need to be stopped.
For men:
Men who take vasodilator medications for erectile dysfunction should hold these for 72 hours prior to surgery and for one week after. These include drugs like:
- Viagra (sildenafil)
- Cialis (tadalafil)
- Edex (alprostadil)
