Appetite Suppressants and GLP-1 Receptor Agonists

Appetite suppressants such as Adipex (phentermine), Tenuate (diethylpropion), Qsymia (phentermine/topiramate) should be stopped 7 days prior to surgery and not resumed after surgery.
GLP-1 receptor agonists, whether used for weight loss or diabetes, should be stopped 14 days prior to surgery. These include:
- Semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy)
- Tirzepatide (Mounjaro and ZepBound)
- Liraglutide (Victoza and Saxenda)
- Exenatide (Byetta and Bydureon)
- Dulaglutide (Trulicity)
- Lixisenatide (Adlyxin)
- Albiglutide (Tanzeum)
- Efpeglenatide
- Any other medication that ends in “tide” is probably in this class of medication.
If you are taking one of these medications for diabetes, please contact your prescriber before stopping. You will be instructed on the day of surgery whether to resume or not.
