Blood Thinner Image

If you take a more potent blood thinner such as those listed below, we will need to take some special precautions, so please talk to a provider at your pre-op visit about a specific plan.  Normally you will need to stop these 2-7 days prior to surgery, and some patients may require treatment with an injectable blood thinner called Lovenox between the time that the medication is stopped and your surgery.  This is referred to as “bridging therapy.”

    • Coumadin (generic: warfarin)
    • Eliquis (generic: apixaban)
    • Pradaxa (generic: dabigatran)
    • Xarelto (generic: rivaroxaban)

In some cases, we may need to get recommendations from the physician that prescribes your blood thinner.
