Lap Band and gastric band revisions is becoming a more commonly performed procedure, because at one time gastric bands were the most popular weight loss surgery across the globe. Hundreds of thousands of these devices were implanted, and many patients had excellent results. However, some patients had issues with the device, or didn’t lose enough weight. The good news is that there are some good options for gastric band revision that can lead to excellent results. Gastric bands can often be converted to gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or even the SIPS/SADI procedure.
Gastric Band Revision Information
Most of the time a gastric band revision can be done in a single operation. There are times when it must be staged though. This means that first the band must be removed and then we return a few months later to complete the procedure. This is only done if excessive scarring is found during the operation. JourneyLite Physicians has extensive experience in revisional gastric band surgery.
These operations take a little longer than primary procedures. Typical operative times are:
- band to sleeve conversion: 1-2 hours, outpatient or overnight stay
- band to bypass conversion: 2-3 hours, overnight stay
- band to SIPS/SADI conversion: 2-3 hours, overnight stay
Return to work for all procedures is 1-2 weeks for a desk job, and around 4 weeks for a strenuous or lifting job.
